The Encounter Project

The Encounter Project is our inter-generational project that has been running since 2018 – we’ve worked alongside care homes and schools across Worthing and its surrounding areas. The idea is to use reminiscence and art sessions as a tool to bring school children, pre-schoolers and older people living in care homes together. We have previously received funding from Worthing and Adur Borough Council to bring this project to life. We won two awards at the 2019 Premier Christian Radio Love Britain and Ireland Awards for best community project. We were regional winners and national runners-up!

The purpose of this project is to:

  • Dispel myths associated with people’s assumptions about dementia
  • Building active dementia friendly communities
  • Promoting citizenship
  • Pass on traditions through oral history via reminiscence therapy
  • Address inequality
  • Reduce loneliness
  • Change people’s perceptions of older and younger people
  • Remove labels

All of the above can contribute to the development of a sustainable community.
